Gierszal will 100% finish last lol, but I still think he is incredibly powerful and hard to watch on numerous moments, and its like me on that screen, I never really saw Dominik, I always saw a reflection of myself.

I recently saw Boyhood, and I agree with your low ranking of Marco Perella. His performance seemed like a caricature and out of place with the rest of the movie. I thought the movie was just ok, however.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on Jason Clarke overall as an actor? I really liked him in Zero Dark Thirty. He was just serviceable in Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, though, but he had a good performance in Everest, which I'd give a 4.

Oh, and how would you rank each year this decade so far in terms of movies released that respective year? I'd be inclined to give the top spot to 2013.

Louis: While Cooper was very good as Longfellow Deeds, do you think that someone like Jimmy Stewart could have done better in the role?

Michael Patison said...

Gutted that Aksel Hennie won't get a review, while Fassbender, who isn't a lead, will instead.

Group 1:
1. Woody Harrelson
2. Antonio Banderas
3. Ralph Fiennes
4. Michael Smiley
5. Jakub Gierszal

Group 2:
1. Matthias Schoenaerts
2. Peter Mullan
3. Daniel Henshall
4. Michael Fassbender
5. Jake Gyllenhaal

Luke Higham said...

Michael: If Louis thinks he's supporting, I'm sure he'll replace him with someone else.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I do think Fassbender's right on the border, so I've no problem with him being moved to the supporting lineup instead. Plus, I really liked headhunters and Hennie would be a good replacement for him.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't worry about Hennie since I reckon Jaime Lannister himself will appear in the supporting lineup for the same film.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Really sad Peyman Moaadi couldn't get reviewed here.

RatedRStar: I haven't seen the film, it was a wild and not I see that even a risky guess. We'll see how will it end up.

JackiBoyz said...

I was kinda underwhelmed by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Smiley, both because I felt the films were directed with an emphasis on its story rather than its acting. As for Suicide Room, I think Gierzal is mostly fine although at the start of the film he is so unlikable and spoilt. I actually think his breakdown scenes are by far the best part of the film although he has some really odd moments which I am certain was down to the film itself like why does he start snogging a statue after that theatre performance.

1. Woody Harrelson
2. Antonio Banderas
3. Ralph Fiennes
4. Michael Smiley
5. Jakub Gierszal

Group 2:

5. Jake Gyllenhaal

Robert MacFarlane said...

Yeah, I don't get the Gyllenhaal love here AT ALL.

Calvin Law said...

My personal ranking for the performances of these I've seen

Schoenaerts - 5 (simply brilliant work of a truly unsettling character)
Harrelson - 5 (excellently uncouth, savage work too and just misses out on my top 5)
Mullan - 4.5 (don't love him as much as most but his is certainly an emotionally powerful performance)
Smiley - 4.5 (not underwhelmed by him at all, a mesmerizing performance if somewhat controlled by the overwhelming direction)
Gyllenhaal - 4.5 (solid leading man work throughout, and the final phone call scene pushes him up to a 4.5 for me)
Fassbender - 4 (not quite the definitive Rochester, that'd be Toby Stephens of all people, but he certainly fits the film well even if Wasikowska overshadowed him)
Fienne - 4 (too loud in certain moments but has a viscreal quality to even his more excessive bits, and he reads the language beautifully)

Calvin Law said...

Also 2011 is truly the year of the understated. Two of my top 5 are virtually silent (Gosling, Dujardin), two others don't say all that much (Oldman, Schoenaerts), even Michael Shannon is far more understated than usual.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Granted, my favorite Gyllenhaal performances come from him playing freaks or weirdos. Make of that what you will.

Calvin Law said...

I'd agree, that pair of eyes of his means that I can never quite buy him as a true everyman. So technically, yeah, he is kind of miscast in Source Code, but I liked him anyway. He's naturally charismatic.

Robert MacFarlane said...

When we get to Supporting, I'm going to heavily advocate for Sam Worthington in The Debt. He may not be good in other movies, but he damn well walks away with that movie.

Matt Mustin said...

I think Gyllenhaal is completely solid in Source Code, but there's no reason to review him.

Calvin Law said...

For 2011 Supporting I'd make the following suggestions:

Kevin Spacey in Margin Call
Jeroen Perceval in Bullhead

I'd also say Intouchables is definitely worth a watch for Louis, a true crowd-pleaser.

Luke Higham said...

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in Headhunters
Paul Giamatti in Ironclad
Simon Russell Beale in The Deep Blue Sea

Robert MacFarlane said...

Also, possibly Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love. He was really funny there, but that movie is baaaaaad.

Need to reevaluate my initial list for 2011, But I can say pretty easily that The Tree of Life is my #1 that year and of the 2010's. I will not be convinced otherwise.

Matt Mustin said...

Robert: No one's trying to convince you otherwise. Your number 1 should be your number 1.

My top 10 would probably be

2. Shame
3. Drive
4. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
5. Suicide Room ( it is my number 1 in terms of feeling it gives me but from a technical point of view its fair I drop it down)
6. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
7. Margin Call
8. Take Shelter
9. The Guard
10. Kill List

In my opinion I really find The 2011 version of Girl to be pretty much better than the original in every way.

Robert MacFarlane said...

It is. The 2009 version is trash.

Calvin Law said...

I agree RatedRStar, I find it well made but in need of a re-watch. I have to say with my recent re-evaluation of Rooney Mara by her recent work, she may end up being my win.

Calvin Law said...

I'm also not a big fan of Noomi Rapace outside of The Drpp, where I thought she did a good job of disappearing into the role despite being thoroughly overshadowed by the other three principals.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Pace is not the "problem" with the 2009 version. The problem is that it was incompetently made.

Anonymous said...

I'd have to agree that the 2011 version is so much better than the 2009 version.

RatedRStar said...

I think I can actually do a decent enough comparison on why the 2011 is way better.

Mikael is supposed to be a womaniser, Daniel Craig is quite convincing at that, Michael Nyqvist really isn't charismatic enough to be believable as that kind of character.

Lisbeth is supposed to be a freak, an anti social type with no friends, Rooney Mara is extremely thin, and has a rather odd appearance in general (I personally think she is nice looking but most people would say Rooney Mara isnt exactly Cate Blanchett) which makes her believable as what would be described as freakish looking, although in the 2009 version Rapaces Lisbeth is fairly muscular looking which is not right at all, isnt Lisbeth supposed to really really thin, what with her hacking all the time I doubt she would be in the gym too often lol. The other supporting actors seem to have more depth to them than the 2009 did too.

The music is way better and has a lot of kick to it particularly the theme song, whereas the 2009 is just sort of standard chase music, the directions stronger too with a lot of suspense and icy shots which made the location seem haunted, the 2009 version had a little bit of this but it also had cheapish sound effects and a lack of tension in many scenes, when Mikael gets captured in the 2011 version he is gased which makes sense because it came out of nowhere so even we would get caught easily, in the 2009 version he gets a needle to the neck which sounds so silly, would you really get needled in the neck so easily lol reminds me of Meet The Fockers when De Niro stabs Stiller by just making him look the other way for a second lol.

The final thing I think is the editing, I felt the editing was done perfectly and with experts cutting it swiftly and got to the point, the 2009 version is kinda choppy especially in the action scenes like when Mikael gets shot at.

Giuseppe Fadda said...

The 2011 version also wins for that heartbreaking final scene.

Louis: What are your thoughts on the special effects of The Thing? I think that they're still impressive to this day and the cinematography is great as well.

Calvin Law said...

Does anyone on here know anything about Cable as a character? Sources say Stephen Lang is in the running, and I generally find him overblown ham, and of the rather unappealing variety (the only performances of his I've liked are definitely Gettysburg and Public Enemies). Ron Perlman is another choice, and frankly I'd take Perlman over Lang in a heartbeat as a badass every day of the week.

Anonymous said...

Calvin: Are you talking about Cable of the X-Men?

Matt Mustin said...

Calvin: Well to be fair, Cable is kind of an overblown character. And a pretty lame one.

Anonymous said...

Calvin: Let's just say that he is the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey. He's also best buddies with Deadpool.

Calvin Law said...

Well in terms of being best buddies with Deadpool, Perlman seems like the more fitting choice. Even if Perlman goes overblown and lame he'll probably be entertaining.

Or they could make good on their Keira Knightley promise and deliver something truly special.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I wasn't as big on Deadpool as everyone else, but I would see the sequel in a heartbeat if they did the Keira Knightley thing.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Possibly but I see no reason to take that one away from Cooper.

mcofra7:

I believe I've covered Lancaster before, maybe in 64 supporting results.

Calvin:

I like those choices particularly McQueen as Curtis.

Anonymous:

Some of the best you'll see in a film, aside from the bit of stop motion in the climax. Nothing else looks dated and is particularly effective since it is all technically real so to speak.

94dk1:

I basically echo your thoughts on Clarke. A good performer from what I can tell, but I think I've only seen five performances from him.

1. 2013
2. 2012
3. 2015
4. 2011
5. 2010
